Hal Higdon è l'autore di circa 35 libri sulla corsa ed innumerevoli articoli su Runner's World. Da giovane è stato atleta "quasi olimpico" ma ha riscosso i suoi maggiori successi agonistici con la maturità. Ultra ottantenne, continua a correre maratone, vincendo nelle rispettive categorie.
Il libro offre una panoramica molto completa sul mondo della maratona, con tutti i suoi perché e come. Le informazioni presentate sono frutto della sua esperienza diretta, dei colloqui con decine di altri allenatori e centinaia di runner che frequentano il suo "forum".
